What is Brazilian Capoeira?

 

Capoeira, in simple terms, is a Brazilian art form.  It consists of elements of Martial Arts, Dance, and Afro-Brazilian Music.  That said, Capoeira is so much more, Capoeira is meant to be inherently nondescript.  Mestre Bimba said “Capoeira is treachery”.  Mestre Pastinha said “Capoeira is everything the mouth eats”.  Another Mestre at a local bautizado said “Capoeira is the opposite of getting hit”.    To some capoeira is a way of life, expecting the worst and hoping for the best.  1.jpg

Slave Ships

The Setting

From the beginning of the sixteenth until the end of the nineteenth century, Portuguese slave traders raided villages along the Yoruban costal region of western Africa to stock the slave trade. The demand for slaves to work on plantations in the New World colonies during this period increased constantly, especially in the region that is today northeastern Brazil.

Approximately three million slaves were forced to learn to survive in this new, harsh land. Unable to defend themselves against the weapons of their new masters, and unable to unify their diverse cultural groups, the slaves had no way to rebel against captivity. With influences from Africa, Portugal, and the indigenous peoples of the New World, a new art form of self-defense and self-expression was developed that ultimately led to their cultural unification and freedom.

Origins of Capoeira

The details on the exact origin of capoeira are still uncertain.  There are many different theories as to how capoeira emerged from this environment of oppression.  It is most likely that capoeira evolved from the melting pot of African cultures.  While taking chickens to market, the slaves probably shared stories about their home land, about which they sang songs, and shared dances.  It’s likely they even discussed means of defiance and escape from their masters.  When the slaves did escape they retreated to safe slave communities called Quilombos.  The Quilombo dos Palmares has particular significance in the origin of capoeira.  The leader of this Quilombo Zumbi, was an active capoeirista, one of the original few. 

 

Capoeira goes Underground

Participants (capoeiras) threw spinning kicks and head butts, narrowly missing their opponents, who countered with acrobatic retreats that suddenly changed from defense to attack. Onlookers sang, clapped their hands, and played drums to the rhythm of the berimbau, a one-stringed bowlike instrument. The lyrics of the songs spoke of happier life and freedom.  As rebellion among the slaves grew more common, capoeira was outlawed. Capoeiristas were forced to move their training underground.  For a long time capoeira was considered an art form of the criminals and vagabonds.

Mestre Bimba

 

The Renaissance of Capoeira

In 1932 Master Bimba, opened the first official capoeira school.  Master Pastinha, also opened up a school during the same period.  With the influence of Mestre Bimba and Mestre Pastinha in the 1930s and ‘40s, capoeira began to be recognized as a legitimate sport and an important part of Brazil’s cultural history.  Capoeira was officially legalized in 1955.  Since then its popularity has grown throughout the country and it is now practiced openly in the streets and taught in the public schools.

 

 

 

Capoeira Worldwide

Due to the efforts of capoeira pioneers such as Mestre Acordeon in the United States and Mestre Nestor Capoeira in Europe, among many other pioneers, this beautiful art has spread throughout the world. Capoeira was formally brought to the United States for the first time in the 1970s, and is now taught in cities across the country.  Mestre Loka and Graduado Mago were particularly instrumental in bringing capoeira to Utah.  Its exotic appearance, and driving movements make it fascinating to watch, and its symbols of the unification of the masses and the freedom of the individual ensure the growth and survival of capoeira in the future.
